What Is a Fade Haircut?
A fade is a haircut where the hair gets gradually shorter as it moves down the sides and back of your head, blended so smoothly that there's no visible line between lengths. The skill is entirely in the blend — a good fade looks like the hair simply dissolves into the skin.

Types of Fades We Cut
Low Fade
The taper starts just above the ear and stays low around the head.
The most conservative of the fades and the easiest to grow out. Keeps weight and shape through the sides, so it reads sharp without reading severe. If you work somewhere buttoned-up, this is usually the one.
Best for: Office-friendly, first-time fade, easy grow-out
Mid Fade
Starts between the ear and the temple — the middle ground, and the most requested fade we cut.
Enough contrast to be obviously intentional, not so much that it dominates your whole head. Works with almost every hair type and face shape, which is exactly why it's the default ask.
Best for: Most face shapes, the safe pick if you're unsure
High Fade
The taper begins at or above the temple for maximum contrast.
Bold and clean. Pushes all the visual weight to the top, which makes textured and spiky styles pop. It's a shorter-lived cut — plan on every two to three weeks to keep the line crisp.
Best for: High contrast, showing off length and texture on top
Skin Fade (Bald Fade)
Blended all the way down to bare skin with a razor finish.
The most technically demanding fade there is — there's nowhere to hide a bad blend when one end is skin. Sharpest possible look, and the one that most rewards an experienced hand.
Best for: The cleanest, sharpest finish available
Taper Fade
A gradual tightening confined to the sideburns and the neckline only.
Technically the subtlest member of the family. The bulk of your hair stays where it is and only the edges get tightened, so it tidies up the outline without changing your look.
Best for: Keeping length, professional settings, subtle cleanup
Drop Fade
The fade line arcs downward as it travels behind the ear.
Instead of running straight around, the line drops in a curve at the back. Follows the natural shape of the skull, which flatters rounder head shapes and pairs well with a hard part.
Best for: Rounder head shapes, pairing with a hard part
Burst Fade
Fans out in a semicircle around the ear, leaving the back longer.
The fade radiates around the ear like a burst and the back is left alone. The signature pairing for mohawks, mullets and modern textured styles — and the most stylistically distinctive fade on this list.

What's the difference between a fade and a taper?
A taper is a type of fade, just the most subtle one. A taper only tightens the sideburns and neckline and leaves the rest of your length alone. A full fade blends the whole side of the head from top to bottom. If you want cleanup without a noticeable change, ask for a taper. If you want visible contrast, ask for a fade.
How often should I get a fade touched up?
Every two to three weeks for a skin or high fade, because the contrast is what makes it work and that's the first thing to blur as it grows. Low fades and tapers hold their shape longer — three to four weeks is usually fine.
Which fade should I ask for if I've never had one?
Start with a low or mid fade. Both are forgiving, both suit nearly every face shape, and both grow out cleanly if you decide it isn't for you. Tell your barber that it's your first fade — they'll walk you through the options and can always go shorter, but never longer.
